Spanish Language For Healthcare: A Growing Discipline

Professor Maria Fellie, Ph.D., current chair of the Spanish program and Certificate in Spanish for Healthcare at Penn State Berks, will introduce Spanish for Healthcare (aka Medical Spanish) as an academic subfield along with several important aspects of this growing area of language studies. This talk will explore facets of the relationship between the Spanish language and Healthcare, broadly, and its social relevance in the United States. Topics such as the rise of “medical Spanish” as an academic subdiscipline, laws governing interpreters and translators in healthcare, changing national and local demographics, cultural awareness in relation to health and to patient-provider relationships, and more, will be explored from the perspective of language education.
