Description / History:
A mid–20th century metal tonometer including the weights in hard plastic gold box with the paperwork included inside and a foam cover to protect the instrument. Interior lid stamped with manufacturer Riester and Made in Germany.
Tonometers were used to check and determine the pressure of the eye. The pressure inside the eye is called intraocular pressure and can be used to determine early signs of glaucoma. The patient would be laid in the recumbent position with the eye numbed. The instrument in placed in a vertical position on the center of the cornea. The average normal tension is between 15 to 20 mm/Hg.
