Description / History:
Five surgical instruments from the eighteenth to nineteenth century. The surgical instruments consist of an ebony handled dental elevator, three ivory handled dental elevators and picks, and one dental key. The bone elevator was used in extracting teeth. The bone handled excavator was used to removed decay. The rat–tail file was used to smooth denture base. The cleve–dent and bakelite burnishers were used on gold inlays, foils, and crowns.

Early elevators were made of brass or iron and changed to ivory or ebony in the 18th–19th century, modern day's elevators are made of stainless steel. Dental keys are used for tooth extractions and it was used as a primary method of tooth extractions before the discovery and development of anesthesia. Denist would insert the dental key horizontally into the oral cavity, then it's hook would be mask over the tooth and the device would be rocked back and forth to be extracted.
