Description / History:
Set of two Allis ether inhalers– first produced by surgeon Oscar H. Allis. While his inhaler design was very popular in the later 1800's, the surgeon is most known for developing a way to reconnect two pieces of intestine.
The inhaler would cover part of the patient's mouth and nose while the anesthetic dripped onto the cloth. Allis himself wrote that the many seperate layers of the gauze would increase the surface area from which ether would evaporate, thus resulting in a more rapid induction of anesthesia.
