Object Name:
Bipolar Forcep
Description / History:
Late twentieth century bipolar forcep. The intended purpose of a bipolar forcep is to coagulate and desiccate tissue by electrical current. The forcep is connected to a bipolar cable that is plugged to a electrosurgical generator. The electrical current is discharged through the tips of the forcep.
Coagulation is important during surgery because it controls the loss of blood by changing liquid blood into a gel/ semi–solid form. The notion of thermal cauterization could date back to the middle ages, when monks would apply a hot iron up the anus to treat hemorrhoids; this were called Saint Fiacre's illness.
