Description / History:
Civil war era amputation saws. Approximately three fourths of civil war operations were primarily amputations. Amputation is a surgical removal of the limb caused by injury and or infection. During that era little was known about diseases and microorganisms, the risk of infections were moderately high. Infections were contracted by unsanitized surgical instruments and dirty, reused bandages, and various reasons. An estimate of 60,000 amputations was performed by the end of the war.
