Description / History:
Urethral Sounds

The sounds themselves are made of steel. The case is made of wood, which is
covered with leather on the outside and fabric on the inside; the case is held closed with metal
fastenings.

The set includes twelve sizes, and were manufactured using the “Van Buren” technique,
making them curved and tapered at either end. Urethral sounds are used, as the name suggests, for the expansion of the urethra; furthermore, sounds were used “in the diagnosis and treatment of urethral disease.” They are still in use today, even dating back to 1889. The high rate of infection caused many doctors to seek alternatives such as catheters.
