Description / History:
Very small mouth–blown glass bottle with a tan label reading, "Compound Tablets". This bottle was prepared by Halsey Bros. Co., based in Chicago in 1855. These particular tablets were used to treat loose coughs, mucus filled bronchial tubes, "harassing" cough, and Aphonia.
Ingredients Include:
Codeine– Is a narcotic medication used to treat moderate pain and coughs. Can be potentially fatal in children under the age of 6 and, as with other opiate–based pain killers, can be highly addictive.
Sanguinaria– It was often used as a respiratory aid, although the juice of this plant is highly poisonous, and those taking large doses of this medicine were at risk of death. It has recently been reported as a cure for cancer, but the FDA has warned against it. In fact, it has been stongly linked to oral leukoplakia which may develop into oral cancer. Ironically, it is often used in toothpaste and mouthwash.
Tartar Emetic– Was traditionally used to induce vomiting, but is now used for respiratory issues, whooping cough, chicken pox, and many other illnesses.
