In the early 20th century, Phenylhydrazine Hydrochloride was successfully used in the treatment of polycythemia vera, a disorder of the blood. It was discontinued when found to be highly toxic. Today, with no available treatment, polycythemia is treated by the periodic extraction of excess blood. Likely the only modern use for bloodletting.
