Description / History:
This brass, monocular microscope was patented and made by Bausch and Lomb Optical Company of Rodchester, NY. The patent date reads Dec 1, 1908. This patent invented by Edward Bausch, was the creation of a rotating nosepiece for microscopes which allowed an objective magnification lens change. This is what is still used in today's microscopes, however instead of magnification being read on each lens a distance in mm is recorded. The three objective lenses on this microscope are 1.9 mm, 4 mm, and 16 mm. An exact date beyond the patent date cannot be found since there is no serial number recorded on the microscope. However, engraved in the arm of the microscope reads "Evans Dental Institute." The Evans Dental Institute is a graduate school for dentists and part of the University of Pennsylvania that was built in 1915. We can therefore assume that this instrument was built after 1915, however not much after since a new patent by the Bausch and Lomb came out in 1915 with much improvements to the microscope not seen in this microscope. The microscope was made for the Arthur H. Thomas Co and sold out of Philadelphia, PA.
