While metal was used in venous cannulas prior to World War II, not until 1945 did the
plastic catheter come into use. The venous cannula is used for a variety of procedures,
including drainage and the delivery of various fluids. The cannula, a versatile instrument, can
be inserted into the nose or even used in a tracheotomy, the venous cannula is reserved
exclusively for insertion into the vein.
