This instrument could be used to diagnose a number of heart defects by measuring the velocity at which a person's blood is moving through his arteries. The flowscope utilizes the well–known Doppler effect, which says that the frequency of the sound waves produced by a moving object (in this case, arterial blood) varies with the velocity at which that object is moving.
