Description / History:
This mercury Rx–Manometer sphygmomanometer was made by W.A. Baum Co. Inc. in Copiague, New York. Seeing blood pressure as an important diagnostic vital sign, William A Baum founded his company on the promise to provide accurate blood pressure apparatuses. This model is in a green metal box with a push button on the side to open. The rubber tubing and pump is black. The arm cuff is blue cloth, and the label reads "Baumanometer calibrated V–lok cuff". This instrument has a capacity of 260 millimeters mercury. On March 10, 1959, William Baum registered the name Rx–Manometer for trademark status. This label appears on this instrument; thus, it was made and used after 1959.

In 1917, the Baumanometer was developed by William A. Baum, a worker in a large clinic which engaged in pre–employment physical exams. Baum's design was the first of the sphygmomanometers which needed no adjustments or recalibration, and its well–sealed tube prevented oxidation of the mercury used for measurement. Its simplicity and striking accuracy caused it to catch on with physicians across America, and variations of Baum's simple design stand today as some of the most popular blood pressure instruments.
