Description / History:
This Baumanometer is in a silver metal case and has a green fabric cover. It records blood pressure in a column of mercury. The cloth arm cuff is adult size and there are directions of use directly on the cuff. The rubber tubing is green and the pump is black. This instrument has a capacity of 260 milimeters mercury (mmHg). It was made by W.A. Baum Co. Inc. in New York. The latest patent number is 1821902 and was published on September 1, 1931. William Baum designed this machine so that the glass measuring tube is interchangeable with another, should the first break. There are two units of this instrument in the EHMHF collection. Today, the Baumanometer is recognized throughout the world as the standard by which other blood pressure machines are calibrated.

In 1917, the Baumanometer was developed by William A. Baum, a worker in a large clinic which engaged in pre–employment physical exams. Baum's design was the first of the sphygmomanometers which needed no adjustments or recalibration, and its well–sealed tube prevented oxidation of the mercury used for measurement. Its simplicity and striking accuracy caused it to catch on with physicians across America, and variations of Baum's simple design stand today as some of the most popular blood pressure instruments.
