Description / History:
There are four cylindrical glass bottles used to hold different chemical compounds and pharmaceutical agents. The glass is hand–blown which dates these bottles to the middle of the 19th century. Each has a label identifying the contents inside the bottle. Below are details on the orginal contents and what they were used for.
Bottle A: This is labeled "Artificial Carlsbad Salt" which is a white crystal. It is a mixture of potassium sulfate, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and dried sodium sulfate. It was used as a laxative.
Bottle B: Is labeled "Hiera Picra" which is a brown cathartic powder made of aloes and canella bark. This bottle was made in Germany.
Bottle C: Is labeled "Camphorated Chalk" which is a white powder. Camphorated chalk is a dentifrice, used with other ingredients to clean teeth. Toothpaste is the most essential dentifrice. This bottle is nearly full.
Bottle D: Is labeled "Sodium Sulphite: Dry Powder" which is a white powder. Today, sodium sulphite is used as a food preservative, in the paper industry, and in water treatment. Acute exposure results in nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This bottle is halfway full.
