Description / History:
Collection of seven pharmacy shop furniture bottles from the Elmer & Amend Pharmacy in New York. The bottles are of various sizes but are all hand blown clear glass with glass stoppers. All are labeled with paper labels for Elmer & Amend Pharmacy.
Bottle A is labeled Fluid Ext. Jaborandi pilocarpus. The introduction of jaborandi leaves to western medicine was in 1873, when Symphronio Coutinho, a Brazilian doctor, went to Paris for a European doctoral degree, taking with him samples of the leaves. The copious sweating and salivation brought about by the leaves attracted the attention of French physicians who began clinical research, publishing their first studies just one year later. The studies showed that jaborandi leaves "increases enormously the perspiration and saliva, and, in a much less degree, the secretion from the mucous membranes of the nose, the bronchial tubes, and the stomach and intestines." By 1876, Jaborandi leaves were being employed in Europe in the treatment of many diseases including fever, stomatitis, colitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, influenza, pneumonia, and psoriasis.
Bottle B is labeled Fluid Ext. Lobeliae. In the 19th century, Lobeliae was used to treat respiratory and muscle disorders and as a purgative. It was popularized in the 19th century by herbalist samuel Thomson, however lobeliae had been used for many years by Native Americans.
Bottle C is labeled Elixir Damiana. Damiana has long been claimed to have a stimulating effect on the libido and its use as an aphrodisiac for both men and women,and its use has continued well into modern times. During the 19th century Damiana was often found in patent medicines such as Pemberton's French Wine Coca, however it was omitted from the non alcoholic Coca Cola. Since 2005, Damiana is illegal to use, possess or distribute in the state of Louisiana due to an increase in oversoses from synthetic cannabis that contained damiana.
Bottle D is labeled Elixir of Glycerophosphate. According to an advertisement in the Spokane Daily Chronicle dated September 12, 1919, Elixir Glycerophosphates is a scientifically developed compound which is most successful as a general tonic. Every ingredient is universally recognized for its tonic value. Elixir Glycerophosphate is suitable for all ages. In 1919 a bottle of Elixir Glycerophosphates sold for $1.50.
Bottle E is labeled Tincture Rhus Toxicodentri. Made from the poison ivy plant, Rhus Toxicodentri is used to treat skin rashes, muscle cramps, strains, sprains, flu, viral infections and arthritis. It is still used today in homeopathic medicine.
Bottle F is labeled Tinet Musk.
Bottle G is labeled Tincture of Foeniculi. Foeniculi is a traditional herbal treatment for mild spasmodic gastrointestinal coplaints including bloating and flatulence, for the treatment of monor spasms associated with mensturation and as an expectorant in coughs associated with colds.
