Clear glass, mold blown pharmacy bottle labeled Spiritus Vini Rect.

Latin for Rectified Grape Spirit, this is basically alcohol. Alcohol has been used in medicine throughout history. There were those who felt that since alcohol was a stimulant, it would be beneficial in the treatment of disease. As a stimulant, it increases the output of blood from the heart and raises blood pressure. It was also used in the treatment on hypothermia since the feeling of warmth it produced was thought to be helpful. Not only was it used as a stimulant, alcohol was also used as a sedative, useful for treating insomnia. In the 19th century, alcohol was considered a valuable sedative and hypnotic drug for all ages, including infants and children.

The 20th century saw a decline in the use of alcohol as doctors gained a better understanding of the pharmacology of alcohol and the development of better alternative treatments.
