Hand blown clear glass bottle labeled Tinct. Bryonia with glass stopper.

In the 18th and 19th century bryonia was uses as a cathartic. However, it was replaced in the 19th century by jalap because it was considered highly dangerous and a powerful irritant, even causing redness and blisters if applied to the skin. Bryonia is still used today, although in very small doses in some homeopathic remedies for cough, bronchitis and pneumonia.
