Description / History:
This set contains five clear glass pharmacy bottles of medium size. They are dated between 1880 and 1920 becasue of the mold–blown glass. Each bottle has a sticker label, a glass stopper, and all but two contain the original contents. The neck of these bottles is narrow, known as a tincture bottle to hold liquids.
Bottle A: Has the label "Fldext. Hyoscyami" which is short for Fluid Extract of Hyoscami. There is nothing in the bottle, but it is stained brown on the sides. Fluid extracts were used, because they represented a uniform drug strength. Hyoscyamus is a plant and acts as a narcotic, gently acceleratig circulation. It was used to relieve pain, induce sleep, quiet irregular nervous action and occasionally as a diuretic.
Bottle B: Has the label "Liquor Plumbi Subacetatis" which is also known as subacetate of lead. The bottle is half full with a clear liquid and white powder precipitate. Subacetate of lead was used as an astringent during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. Lead poisoning led doctors to abandon its use.
Bottle C: Has the label "Tinctura Cantharidis". Tincture of Cantharides has a green–yellow color when prepared. Tinctures are alcoholic extracts of plant or animal material. Cantharidin is secreted most notably by the Spanish fly. As a blister agent, it is used in topical medications to remove warts and was once used as a diuretic. I also has a known application as an aphrodisiac.
Bottle D: Has the label "Tinctura Cacti Grandiflori". Remedies such as this one derived from the cactus plant were used with irregularities of the heart such as endocarditis, dyspnea (shortness of breath), and arrhythmia.
Bottle E: Has the lable "Tinctura Quillajae" or the Tincture of Quillaja. This preparation is mainly used as an emulsifying agent for oils, balms, and resins.
