Description / History:
19th century white ceramic medicine jar labeled Unguentum Stronii.

Unguentum is a ammoniated and salicylated mercury ointment used in the 19th century for the treatment of syphilis. However, many patients succummed to mercury poison rather than the syphilis. This treatment was used until the early 20th century when it was replaced by arsenic as a treatment.
