According the the 1915 issue of the National Association of Retail Druggists Journal, Gentianae Glycerinatum was used as a bitter tonic, stomichic, alterative, useful in diabeties for its germicidal action, and has nutritive value. While it may have nutritional benefits, especially for those recovering from illness, according to a 1907 issue of the Medical Critic and Guide, the taste is so bad that it is very difficult to administer.
