Art & Anatomy: A Visual History of Medicine
Step into a gallery where science meets storytelling through art.
The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum is proud to feature an eclectic collection of medical art that spans centuries and continents, offering a visual journey through the evolution of medicine.
At the heart of the collection is a rare, original scroll of anatomical illustrations—over a century old—used to train early medical students. This remarkable piece details the intricate systems of the human body: muscles, bones, arteries, veins, and nerves.
As you explore our main hallway, the left wall showcases a curated series of anatomical reproductions, textbook illustrations, and artistic interpretations of medical milestones throughout history. Directly across, the right wall highlights Lancaster’s own contributions to the healing arts through postcards, photographs, institutional charters, and medical memorabilia.
In our Hands-On Educational Room, visitors can view large-scale posters tracing the early development of medicine in ancient civilizations such as Greece, India, Egypt, and Italy. Nearby, across from our historic pharmacy exhibit, you’ll find the delicate beauty of Scherenschnitte—a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch paper-cutting art—featuring botanical designs by local artist Joanne Rab Ripple.
Throughout the museum, original artworks, vintage photographs, portraits, and historical posters bring Lancaster’s rich medical legacy to life. We invite you to experience how art, history, and healing intertwine in this unique and ever-evolving exhibit.
