Description / History:
Small leather pocket surgical kit. Made by Charles Lentz & Sons in Philadelphia (18 N 11th St.). The brown leather bag is dated between 1887 – 1925, while most instruments (if not all) are dated between 1850–1880. This strongly suggests that the owner of this kit purchased the bag for his already acquired instruments (many of which were popularly used during the civil war).
The inside pocket holds a patch of cloth full of needles and two packs of surgeon's silk: both used for stiches. Instruments include tortoise–shell double blade pocket scapels, arterial forceps, a tongue–tied surgery tool and male and female catheters.
