Deaver retractor were developed to move or hold large organs inside the abdominal cavity away from the surgical site. This device could also be used in the retraction of liver, spleen and large intestines.
Invented in early eighteenth century, the deaver retractor by Dr. John Blair Deaver. Born in Lancaster County, Dr. Deaver is significantly remembered by his surgical technique during appendectomy. He authored the following books: Surgical Anatomy, A treatise with A. P. C. Ashhurst, and Excursions into Surgical Subjects. He also wrote countless medical articles and manuscripts.
