Description / History:
Gripe water is an over the counter liquid supplement that is used to treat colic or relieve stomach discomfort for infants. Ingredients in gripe water include sodium bicarbonate, water, glycerin, zingiber officinate, citric acid, glycerin, and various herbs; formula varies from company to company. The original ingredients consist of dill oil, sodium bicarbonate, sugar, water and alcohol. This remedy was developed by an English pharmacist, William Woodward, in 1852.
In this collection, there are tummy tablets and five bottles of gripe water, four bottles are unopened.
A. This bottle was made in London, England during the late seventeenth century and it was manufactured by W. Wood Ward Ltd.
B. This liquid supplement was made during the mid–twentieth century. Dillex gripe mixture was manufactured by Optrex Ltd. This bottle is sealed and unopen with 100 mL of gripe water inside the bottle. The remedy came with a spoon that has a scale of 5 ml.
C. Dr. Hand's carminative mixture contained 2 fluid ounces of solution. This was made in Connecticut during the twentieth century by the Hand Medicine Company.
D. This unopened bottle of gripe water has 150 mL of its original content. This liquid supplement was produced from mid to late twentieth century by the W. Woodward Ltd.
E. This anti–colic gripe water was made around mid–1980s by A. W. Chase in Quebec, Canada. The bottle is unopened and has 5 fluid ounces or 142 mL of original gripe water. The directions and ingredients are labeled in French.
F. Tummy tablets for infants. There are 24 tablets and the directions and ingredients are labeled in French. This was sold at the This "N" That store in Ontario for $1.49.
