Description / History:
The trocar includes a two–piece case and several cannulas, both are made of
steel. The cannula is hollow and screws into the longer portion of the case, which converts into
a handle.
Trocars were used as a means of draining bodily fluids. In the mid–18th century, trocars
guided surgical scopes into the bladder, and in 1950 George Kelling performed the first
laparoscopic surgery. Innovations in trocar technology continued throughout the 20th century,
in the 1950s dual trocar procedures were introduced by Dr. Heinz Kalk. In the 21st century, the use of more complex robotic trocars have revolutionized the way trocars are used in surgery.
