100 yards of black braided surgical silk on a wooden spool in a plastic container with lid.
Sugical silk has been used to close wounds since ancient times, and it is still used in
some procedures in today. In the late 1960s and 70s medical advances resulted in the
introduction of synthetic sutures, such as polypropylene (1969) and coated vicryl (1979). They
gradually replaced silk, therefore making its application a rare occurrence since the 1980s.
