As alluded to on the label, which reads “this is a collecting bottle for surgical drainage
and aspiration measurements in dictated are only approximate.” The aspirator jar was used for
the drainage collection due to aspiration. Aspirators are pressure devices used for removing
liquids. The tubes connected to the jar would be connected to a machine that would provide thesuction. The ball shaped object inside the jar was used to cut off suction and ensure the jar
would not overflow. Foregger is an American company, and produced aspirator jars in a variety
of sizes. There are records of aspirators being used as far back as 1858, and some evidence
suggests that they have been around even longer. Aspirators are still used in medicine today.
