Description / History:
Set of three19th century pharmacy bottles for herbs. Made from clear blown glass with glass stoppers. Labels are hand written on paper at lower part of bottle. Bottles contain Kola Nuts, Gum Spruce, and Cherry stems
Pharmacists used the Kola nuts as a stimulent. Later in the century it was added to coca leaves, creating the popular coca cola. Originally sold as a patent medicine the cocaine and caffiene combination was advertised to cure nearly all illnesses.
Gum Spruce had many uses during the 19th century. Pharmacists used Gum Spruce in commercial preparations as a cough cure. Chewing Gum Spruce acted as a long lasting antiseptic. Other uses include mixing the gum spruce with fat was used to seal seams on canoes, making them watertight.
Cherry stems were first introduced to European settlers by Native Americans. Various parts of the tree was used, each having different medicinal uses. Common ailments treated were bronchitis, burns, colds, coughs, diarrhea, dysentery, fever, insomnia, menstrual cramps, dore throat and rheumatism.
