Ammonium Chloride– Terpin Hydrate tablets were administered to patients presenting with acute or chronic bronchitits, pneumonia, or bronchiectasis. The tablets were prescribed to loosen mucus that had accumulated in the respiratory tract. Terpin hydrate exerts its effects directly on the bronchial secretory cells in the lower respiratory tract to liquefy and facilitate the elimination of bronchial secretions.
Terpin Hydrate was banned in the 1990's by the FDA due to lack of proof of efficacy.
Formulation: Ammonium Chloride (0.5 grain), Terpin Hydrate (0.5 grain), Ext. Licorice (0.5 grain), Powder Squill (0.125 grain), Ext. Hyoscyamus (0.031 grain).
