Allied Health Practices

The category of allied health professions includes, but is not limited to, the following groups: chiropractors, dietitians, dentists and dental hygienists, physical therapists, sonographers, speech pathologists, audiologists, optometrists, paramedics, phlebotomists, podiatrists, and medical dosimetrists.
Battlefield Medicine
Edward Hand is no stranger to the effects of war on the history of medicine. This section deals with the historical developments and stories through various wars, including the American Revolutionary War, Civil War, and WWI.
General Edward Hand
While little is known of this museum’s namesake, General Edward Hand played a vital role in many parts of Lancaster’s history. This section deals with sharing the life and legacy of Edward Hand, from his early years fighting in the Revolutionary War to the development of the Lancaster Almshouse and finally his death in 1802. He was also a well known physician and surgeon.
History of Specialties in Lancaster County
This section best represents the mission of our Museum by detailing the histories of specific medical fields. Our current histories include fields such as gastroenterology, oncology, nephrology, pulmonary medicine, radiology, urology and more.
If you are interested, or know someone that would be interested, in providing a history or your specialty that is not yet provided, please contact our publications editor at publications@lancastermedicalheritagemuseum.org.
Infectious Diseases
As a growing cultural center, Lancaster was not immune to the epidemics and disease spread that hit the rest of the early United States. Our Iron Lung machine is testament to the treatment and fight against Poliomyelitis, one of many infectious diseases to hit Lancaster county.
Lancaster City & County Medical Society
With a mission "to promote and protect the practice of medicine for the physicians of Lancaster County so they may provide the highest quality patient-centered care in an increasingly complex environment", the Lancaster City & County Medical Society (LCCMS) provides many sources of research into Lancaster's medical history. This section includes excepts from their publication 'Our Medical Heritage' and other historical records.
Lancaster County Institutions
Lancaster County has a long-established history of medical institutions, including the oldest pharmacy and second oldest hospital in the United States. The following articles relate to the history of specific hospitals and health institutions in Lancaster county.
Lancaster County Medical History
As the mission of the Museum has a specific focus on Lancaster county, this section relates to the medical histories pertaining to Lancaster and neighboring regions. This section is similar to the Medicine in Pennsylvania article section but differs in that this area is focused specifically in Lancaster County. Here you’ll learn the history of medical men in Lancaster, as well as some histories from neighboring towns like Quarryville.
Lancaster General Hospital Staff Publications 1946-2000
With at least half of our articles coming from history researchers and professionals, this section is dedicated to the work of medical professionals, specifically those from Lancaster General Hospital. This section is a compilation of work done in multiple journals and publications over a 55 year time period. Such papers include case studies, procedural overviews, local medical advertisements/pamphlets, and more. This is not felt to be a complete list of all articles written in this period from Lancaster General Health staff, appearing in journals. If you are aware of others, please forward them to publications@lancastermedicalheritagemuseum.org.
Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum
Since its founding in 1982, the Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum has had several names and many homes. These articles relate directly to this museum, its history and its work in the Lancaster community.
Lancaster Medical Legacies & Lineages
While Lancaster might not have physicians as well known as Philadelphia’s Benjamin Rush, it does have several familial lineages that span decades of its medical history. Families, such as the Atlees and Wentz have many generations of physicians and healthcare professionals.
Lancaster Oral Histories
With centuries of medical history, Lancaster county has many stories to be told. This section captures the anecdotes and stories from some of Lancaster county's physicians and medical professionals.
